A Modern Approach to Thyroidectomy: Evaluating the Benefits of Surgical Loupes

Abstract

Background: Total thyroid removal was rare in the past due to surgical risks and hormone challenges. It became more common only in the late 20th century.
Aim: To assess whether the application of a loupe for magnification in the surgical field enhances the outcomes of complete thyroidectomy relative to the traditional procedure in terms of identifying the parathyroid glands in addition to preserving the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN).
Patients and methods: This research was done on 30 individuals separated into 2 groups: Group A underwent conventional total thyroidectomy (n=15), and Group B (n=15) underwent total thyroidectomy using surgical loupe in the General Surgery Department at Aswan University Hospital.
Results: No significant variation was seen among the examined groups for preoperative and postoperative outcomes. A statistically significant variation existed among the examined groups for overall operating time and intraoperative blood loss, RLN identification, as well as Identification of 4 or more parathyroid glands.
Conclusion: Surgical Loupe-Assisted Total Thyroidectomy (SLATT) improves precision and lowers complication rates, especially by aiding nerve identification. It proves valuable in thyroid surgeries needing enhanced visualization.
